The first development of the Z-Wave was in 2001 in Denmark and in 2005 the Z-Wave Alliance was founded. From the beginning the smart home was the effort of development, so that experiences from other systems were also taken into account. However, the focus was exclusively on radio transmission. Despite the European roots of the Z-Wave, the development was mainly driven in America and Asia. Since the system has already gone through several development stages and not all manufacturers always adhere fully to the communication protocols, communication problems occasionally arise. Some manufacturers try to limit access through device authorization without naming Z-Wave in the foreground. There are also compatibility lists of devices. The alliance exerts influence in order to enforce the standard uniformly. The functionality of the Z-Wave communication protocol is very diverse, so that the variety of devices is very large and many multifunction sensors are offered. With "Mesh" and "Repeater hopping" in radio networks, the radio propagation is improved. A favourable price of units and the variety of sensors make Z-Wave interesting to use.
