LoRaWAN is a low power wide area network based on the radio technology of LoRa (Long Range). It is the invention of a company that is made available to other users as open source. Although it uses the already known frequency ranges of 433 MHz and 868 MHz, this radio transmission has a very long distance of up to 2 km in city areas and up to 40 km in rural areas. In addition, there is good penetration, e.g. in basement areas This creates new opportunities above all to collect sensor data. The LoRa Alliance is pushing ahead with the standardization and promotion of interoperability. They were founded in 2015 and there is currently fast growing interest in their use and further development. The number of alliance members has recently increased to over 500, using this technology in more than 100 countries. In addition to the long range of this radio technology, the focus is also on low power. Power requirements for end devices of around 10 mA and 100 nA in sleep mode allow battery usage times of up to 15 years. Integration into other systems takes place via gateway. Various controller manufacturers already include this technology in the main configuration of their devices. This system will likely become an important part of smart home.
